Yes, GLP-1 medications can interact with certain medications, health conditions, eating patterns, and situations where digestion speed matters. GLP-1 receptor agonists are medicines that act on the glucagon-like peptide-1 pathway, which helps regulate appetite, blood sugar, and stomach emptying.

Second, they want to know whether the medication interacts with their lifestyle, meals, alcohol, medical conditions, or upcoming procedures.

Patients who want a quick fix, who are not able to eat enough protein and nutrients, or who do not want monitoring may not be good candidates. GLP-1 medications can reduce appetite significantly. That can be useful, but it can also lead to under-eating, muscle loss, constipation, fatigue, or difficulty maintaining healthy routines if the plan is not structured well.
Extra caution is important for patients taking insulin or sulfonylureas, people with a history of pancreatitis, significant gallbladder disease, severe gastrointestinal motility problems, eating disorder history, kidney disease related to dehydration risk, or complex medication regimens. Patients who are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding should discuss this specifically with their clinician because GLP-1 medications are generally not used in those situations unless a qualified clinician determines otherwise.
Patients planning surgery or procedures involving anesthesia should also tell the surgical and anesthesia team if they use a GLP-1 medication. Because these medications can slow stomach emptying, the care team may give specific instructions about medication timing before a procedure.

Patients should contact their clinician promptly for persistent upper abdominal pain, worsening nausea, pain after meals, fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or pain that radiates to the back. These symptoms need medical evaluation.

Follow-up is also the time to reassess whether the medication is still helping enough to justify the dose, cost, and side effect profile.
Patients should also tell the clinic about any new medications, major diet changes, planned procedures, pregnancy plans, or side effects that appear after dose changes. A GLP-1 plan should evolve as the patient’s body, goals, and risk profile change.
Seek urgent medical care for severe or persistent abdominal pain, especially if it radiates to the back or comes with vomiting, fever, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. These symptoms may signal pancreatitis or gallbladder disease and should not wait for a routine visit.
Urgent care is also appropriate for signs of severe dehydration, fainting, confusion, chest pain, shortness of breath, severe allergic reaction, or symptoms of dangerously low blood sugar that do not improve with your care plan. If symptoms feel sudden, severe, or unsafe, call emergency services.
