Our Approach to Advanced Diagnostics

Advanced testing is useful when the results will change a clinical decision. But often it can be counterproductive, when it simply generates more data without a corresponding change in a care plan. Our approach is structured to avoid that trap.

Before any specialty test is ordered, we evaluate what we’re actually trying to understand about your physiology. Then we select the test or panel most likely to answer that specific question. Results are interpreted in the context of your history, your symptoms, your prior labs, and each other, not as isolated data points. 

Sometimes the right answer is a comprehensive workup when warranted but often we use more  targeted testing to inform your care plan, depending on what data we need. 

The Categories of Advanced Testing We Use

Comprehensive Hormone Panels

Standard panels often check a handful of hormones in a single moment. Comprehensive hormone assessment looks at the full picture such as thyroid (TSH, free T3, free T4, reverse T3), sex hormones (testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, DHEA, SHBG), and cortisol rhythm across the day.

Values are interpreted with an eye toward optimal function rather than just disease thresholds. When clinically appropriate, specialty panels such as the DUTCH test provide additional information on hormone metabolism.

Cardiometabolic Assessment

A basic lipid panel measures cholesterol content. Advanced cardiometabolic testing measures what actually drives risk such as particle count, particle size, inflammatory markers, and metabolic function.

Apolipoprotein B (ApoB), for example, reflects the total number of atherogenic particles circulating in your blood and is considered a more accurate marker of cardiovascular risk than standard LDL cholesterol by the National Lipid Association.

Paired with fasting insulin, HbA1c, hsCRP, homocysteine, and other markers, this gives a significantly clearer picture of long-term cardiovascular and metabolic trajectory.

Advanced Diagnostics

Gut Health and GI-MAP Testing

Gut health affects far more than digestion. Inflammation, immune function, hormonal signaling, mental health, and nutrient status are all impacted by your gut health.

The GI-MAP uses PCR technology to quantify bacteria, parasites, yeast, viruses, and markers of digestive function and gut inflammation. When gut dysfunction may be driving systemic symptoms, this level of granularity helps us target interventions rather than guess at them.

Early Cancer Screening

Conventional screening (mammography, colonoscopy, PSA, skin checks) catches some cancers early but misses others entirely – the cancers without established screening account for roughly half of cancer diagnoses and a majority of cancer deaths in the U.S.

Multi-cancer early detection (MCED) tests, such as Galleri, analyze cell-free DNA in a single blood draw to screen for signals across more than 50 cancer types.

These tests complement, not replace, recommended standard screening, and patient selection matters. We discuss candidacy, cost, realistic performance, and follow-up implications before ordering.

Advanced Diagnostics

Methylation and Genetic Testing

Single-nucleotide polymorphisms in genes like MTHFR can affect how your body processes B vitamins, manages homocysteine, regulates detoxification, and performs other day-to-day biochemistry. Elevated homocysteine has been associated with cardiovascular and cognitive risk.

Genetic and methylation testing, when clinically indicated, can personalize decisions about nutrient support, supplementation, and cardiovascular risk management. It’s ordered when results will meaningfully change the plan, not routinely.

Nutrient and Micronutrient Status

Many patients are chronically insufficient in nutrients that genuinely affect energy, mood, immune function, bone density, and cellular repair.

Vitamin D, B vitamins (particularly B12 and folate), iron and ferritin, magnesium, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids are among the most common and most correctable. We test when results will inform specific repletion decisions.

Body Composition and Cellular Health Markers

Body composition analysis looks beyond weight to evaluate lean muscle mass, visceral fat, bone density, and phase-angle markers that reflect cellular membrane integrity, an indirect marker of overall cellular health.

These metrics track more meaningfully over time than the scale alone, particularly when monitoring hormone therapy, metabolic interventions, or progressive training.

What We Do With the Results

A test result is the start of a conversation, not the conversation itself. Every patient receives a structured interpretation visit, typically 60 to 90 minutes, where results are reviewed together, prioritized, and translated into a plan.

That plan generally follows a consistent structure:

  • Address root-cause drivers first, before adding symptomatic treatments
  • Layer interventions deliberately, so we can evaluate what each one is contributing
  • Set defined reassessment intervals, usually every three to six months during active optimization
  • Transition to maintenance once markers have stabilized, rather than continuing indefinite intensive testing
  • The goal is to reduce fragmentation and increase clarity, both for you and for us.

What This Is Not

A few clarifications, because this is a space where more testing is often sold as inherently better:

  • This is not a “test everything” program. Over-testing generates confusion, anxiety, incidental findings, and costly rabbit holes. We test when the answer will change the plan.
  • This is not a substitute for standard preventive care. Mammography, colonoscopy, blood pressure monitoring, and other established screening remain core; advanced diagnostics complement them.
  • This is not a guarantee that every marker will turn into a treatable finding. Some answers are reassuring. Some are neutral. Some change what we do.
  • This is not a peptide, IV, or supplement sales pipeline. Interventions that follow testing are sequenced based on what your results actually warrant.

Advanced diagnostics are a structured, physician-led evaluation tool, ordered when clinically appropriate, interpreted in context, and translated into a plan with measurable follow-through.

Safety

The diagnostic tests described above are generally well tolerated. Blood draws carry their usual minor considerations such as brief discomfort, occasional bruising at the draw site, and rare lightheadedness. Stool and saliva collections are non-invasive. Body composition analysis involves standing on a specialized scale for a brief measurement.

Specialty tests such as multi-cancer early detection have specific considerations, including the possibility of false positives that require diagnostic follow-up and false negatives that can provide false reassurance, which we discuss in detail before ordering.

Contact the clinic if significant bruising or swelling persists at a blood draw site beyond 48 hours, if you have questions about results, or if new symptoms develop while awaiting or reviewing results. Seek urgent care immediately for signs of serious infection at a draw site (spreading redness, warmth, fever), severe or unusual bleeding, or any symptom that feels clinically concerning.

FAQs

How is this different from my annual physical labs?

Standard physical labs screen for whether values fall inside the reference range used to diagnose disease. Advanced diagnostics typically evaluate a broader set of markers and interpret them against optimal ranges for function, longevity, and risk reduction, ranges that are often narrower. We also interpret trends over time rather than isolated snapshots.

Do I need all of these tests?

Almost certainly not. We select tests based on your history, goals, and symptom picture. Some patients need comprehensive hormone and cardiometabolic workups; others benefit most from targeted testing around a specific concern. The panel is tailored to you, not standardized.

Will insurance cover this?

Halo uses a private lab that does not accept insurance. With this, we aim to offer very reasonable costs for your labs. Specialty panels, certain hormone metabolites, GI-MAP, multi-cancer early detection, and genetic testing are generally out of pocket. We discuss cost and coverage transparently before ordering anything.

What is an MCED test and should I get one?

Multi-cancer early detection tests like Galleri use cell-free DNA analysis to screen for signals from more than 50 cancer types in a single blood draw. They complement standard screening and may be appropriate for individuals over 50 or those with elevated cancer risk. They are not a replacement for mammography, colonoscopy, or other established screening, and they have real limitations, including false positives and imperfect sensitivity. Candidacy is a clinical conversation.

What’s the difference between ApoB and a regular cholesterol panel?

A standard lipid panel measures the cholesterol content of your lipoprotein particles. ApoB counts the number of atherogenic particles directly. When these two measurements disagree, which happens more often than most patients realize, ApoB tracks more accurately with cardiovascular risk, according to recent consensus from the National Lipid Association.

Why would I need a GI-MAP?

When persistent digestive symptoms, unexplained inflammation, food reactions, skin issues, or fatigue have a plausible gut connection, a GI-MAP gives us quantitative information about bacteria, pathogens, yeast, and markers of digestive function. It’s a focused test for focused questions, not a general-population screen.

Do I need genetic testing?

For most patients, not routinely. When a specific question, methylation support, MTHFR status, cardiovascular genetic risk, pharmacogenomic considerations, will change the plan, targeted genetic testing can be useful. We order it purposefully, not comprehensively.

How often should I retest?

Reassessment intervals are defined up front based on what we’re tracking. During active optimization, typically every three to six months. During maintenance, less frequently. We don’t test indefinitely when results have stabilized.
