What Is Body Composition Analysis?

Body composition analysis is a clinical assessment that breaks your body weight into its physiologically meaningful components that include fat mass, fat-free mass, skeletal muscle mass, total body water, visceral fat, and segmental distribution across your arms, legs, and torso.

The seca mBCA Ultra uses 8-point bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), a technology that sends safe, imperceptible electrical signals through the body and measures how they travel through different tissues.

Muscle, fat, bone, and water each conduct those signals differently and from those patterns, the system calculates a comprehensive picture of your body’s composition.

Safety

Body composition analysis with the seca mBCA Ultra is safe, non-invasive, and painless. You stand on the platform, hold the handrails, and remain still for 24 seconds, no radiation, no needles, no fasting required.

For the most accurate results, we recommend avoiding food, alcohol, and intense exercise in the 2–3 hours prior, staying well-hydrated without drinking large amounts of water right before the scan, and removing metal jewelry or accessories.

If you have a pacemaker, defibrillator, or other implanted electronic device, please let us know, BIA technology isn't appropriate for patients with these devices, and pregnant patients should not undergo BIA testing.

FAQs

How is this different from a DEXA scan?

DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) is widely considered the clinical gold standard for body composition and bone density. The seca mBCA Ultra is a medical-grade bioelectrical impedance system independently validated to within 2–3% of DEXA for the metrics that matter most in clinical practice – skeletal muscle mass, fat mass, and total body water. The practical differences come down to access and use: DEXA involves a small dose of radiation, requires scheduling at an imaging facility, and isn't well-suited to frequent retesting. The seca scan involves no radiation, takes 24 seconds, can be performed in-office at any visit, and is designed for repeated measurement over time – which is exactly how body composition data becomes most useful. For patients who specifically need bone density assessment, we coordinate DEXA imaging separately.

How often should I have a body composition scan?

For most members, we recommend a baseline scan when you join the practice, followed by reassessments every 3 to 6 months. The right cadence depends on what's happening in your plan. Patients in a medical weight loss program, starting BHRT, or actively working on body recomposition may benefit from more frequent scans – every 6 to 8 weeks – to track meaningful change. Members in a maintenance phase typically scan once or twice a year as part of their healthspan review. Your provider will recommend the cadence that makes sense for your specific goals.

Is this covered by insurance?

Body composition analysis is generally not covered by insurance, as most carriers consider it a wellness or preventive service rather than a diagnostic one. At our practice, body composition scans are included as part of select membership tiers and program-based care. For non-members or out-of-program patients, we offer transparent self-pay pricing. Your care team will walk through cost specifics during your discovery consult so there are no surprises.

How accurate is BIA compared to home scales?

There's a significant difference between consumer-grade BIA scales and medical-grade systems like the seca mBCA Ultra – even though both rely on the same underlying technology. Home scales typically use 2 or 4 contact points and a single frequency, which produces a rough estimate of body fat with error margins that can exceed 8 to 10%. The seca uses 8 contact points and multiple frequencies, allowing it to map composition segmentally (across each limb and the trunk) with research-grade precision. It's been independently validated at 97% accuracy for muscle mass against whole-body MRI and 98% accuracy for fat-free mass against the 4-compartment model. In practical terms, your home scale can give you a directional trend; the seca gives you data clinical enough to base your care plan on.

Can I track my results over time?

Yes – and this is where the data becomes most valuable. Each scan is stored in your secure patient record, and your provider reviews trends with you at each follow-up.
