How Laser Therapy Works

Laser skin therapy uses focused wavelengths of light to create precise thermal effects in the skin. Non-ablative lasers work best in a series. Most patients benefit from three to five sessions spaced roughly four to six weeks apart, depending on the indication and how the skin is responding. Improvements typically develop over three to six months as new collagen and elastin mature.

Results are not permanent. Ongoing sun exposure, stress, hormonal shifts, and the ordinary effects of aging will contribute to new changes over time. Maintenance sessions once or twice a year extend outcomes for most patients.

Safety

Non-ablative laser therapy is generally well tolerated, and serious adverse events are rare in clinical studies. Common, self-limiting effects include mild redness, warmth, and a sunburn-like sensation for several hours after treatment, brief swelling, mild tingling or itching, and occasionally short-lived flaking or dryness as the treated dermis remodels. Most patients resume normal activity the same day and return to regular skincare within a day or two.

Contact the clinic if redness, swelling, or sensitivity persists beyond 72 hours, if blistering, unusual pigment changes, or crusting develop, or if you notice any new symptom you’re uncertain about. Seek urgent care immediately for signs of infection at the treatment site (spreading redness, warmth, fever), severe unrelenting pain, unusual skin changes that look deeper than surface irritation, or any symptom that feels clinically concerning.

Does laser therapy hurt?

How many sessions will I need?

Is non-ablative laser safe for darker skin tones?

Can I have laser therapy during the summer?

Yes. Unlike ablative lasers, non-ablative treatments don’t require extended avoidance of sun exposure. Consistent daily SPF use before and after sessions is still important.

How is laser therapy different from microneedling or Sofwave?

Lasers use targeted light wavelengths. Microneedling uses microscopic mechanical injury. Sofwave uses ultrasound energy. Each mechanism addresses different skin layers and different concerns, and they’re often used alongside each other, not as alternatives.

When should I not have laser treatment?

Active skin infection, recent isotretinoin use, certain photosensitizing medications, pregnancy (depending on the specific laser and area), untreated active cold sores in the treatment area, and a few other conditions are reasons to avoid or defer. Candidacy is assessed in person.
